Short Historical Note:

The Unitarian Church in Frenchtown or Kingwood [First Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Township of Kingwood] located at the intersection of Hunterdon County Route 519 and Oak Summit Road is one of the oldest churches in the area. Called The Old Stone Meeting House, It was established in 1754 by a generous grant from a local estate. The original church was located across the road from the present church, where the cemetery is now located. The church is an important historical site. It was used by the Continental Army in 1778 to hold British and Hessian prisoners on their way to Virginia. The original church fell into disrepair and in 1837; a new church was built across the road using some of the stones from the original chapel. The church again fell into disrepair and was vacant for many years until the Universalists took over the facility.
