Newtown: How a small town stays small and vibrant
Newtown Pennsylvania is one of those rare towns in America that has retained it's small town character, and managed to stay alive. On Newtown's Main Street which is called State Street in this instance, you'll find a local hardware store that feels like something out of the 1940's, beauty salons, and an old timey book and record exchange.
That's not to say that Newtown doesn't have it's national chain stores and shops, it does. In fact Starbucks and the Gap take up two of the prime corners in the tiny downtown shopping district. Newtown definitely has a sense of it's past and a respect for small business owners, but it is probably more alive and vibrant today because the city fathers and mothers have allowed the huge national chains in to compete.
There are thousands of small towns across this country that have retained their small town character with such a tight grip on zoning and regulations that they have shriveled up and died. Thank Goodness, Newtown Pennsylvania has found a balance, and it feels very good.
