Newtown + Bucks County History
Newtown Pennsylvania is one of the oldest communities in Bucks County. It is rich in history and there is no town in the area that takes more pride in it's past and works harder to preserve it than Newtown Pennsylvania. The home or tavern pictured above, called the "Bird In Hand", was the site of an important event in the Revolutionary War. A historical marker outside the Bird In Hand reads:
On Feb. 19, 1778, while the British occupied Philadelphia, some 40 armed Loyalists raided the tavern here. The fighting left 5 American soldiers dead, 4 wounded, 11 captured. Tailors here were making uniforms for use at Valley Forge, and 2000 yards of cloth were lost.
This incident is sometimes called the "Newtown Skirmish", or the Loyalist Raid of 1778. The site is located on South State Street where it intersects with Mercer Street.

Half-Moon Inn
The Half Moon Inn, home of the Newtown Historic Association, located at 101,105 Court Street, is open for tours: Tuesdays, Thursdays. Boone Garden, Turnpike Toll House, Thornton-Hicks House are other sites located around Newtown maintained by the historical society.
