Guide to The Best of Newtown PA

Newtown Pennsylvania is the name for two municipalities in Southern Bucks County. The borough of Newtown is a small community with a population of 2,312 people. Founded by William Penn in 1684, it is a model of historic preservation and civic pride. The larger community of Newtown Township that surrounds the historic borough, has a population of 18,206 people. The borough and the township work together to keep Newtown vital and modern while at the same time respecting it's rich history and architectural integrity.
Newtown would look and feel very differently than it does today, if some thoughtful citizens had not been outraged by an ignorant developer tearing down a historic structure overnight in 1962. The home that he destroyed was one that George Washington had used as his headquarters in 1776, after the Battle of Trenton. These foreward thinking residents of Newtown formed the Newtown Historical Association to insure that this type of mistake was never made again.
Walking the streets of downtown Newtown takes you back in time to the early days of the founding of this country. In the center of the historic district on State Street is the "Bird In Hand", the site of a Revolutionary War battle in which 5 American soldiers were killed in 1778.
Newtown is not an overrun tourist destination. The businesses downtown range from a shoe repair shop to a trendy GapBody store. The downtown area is alive with doctors offices, beauty salons, law offices and service oriented businesses that are here to serve the residents of the small borough and the surrounding countryside. That is not to say that Newtown doesn't have it's trendy clothing boutiques and charming gift shops, it does, but this is not a town that will dry up if New Yorkers don't show up on the weekend. And I am not implying that tourists won't love Newtown and that they aren't welcome. It is just that Newtown is a different type of destination.
You won't find many bed and breakfast inns here or an art gallery in every other shop on the main street like you do in New Hope. If you come to Newtown for the weekend you can stay in one of the historic old hotels on State Street, and have dinner in the hotel or go out for dinner in one of Newtown's many restaurants.
