Elaborate iron scrollwork on a balcony in Savannah, with an antique wrought iron fence in the foreground.

Savannah has great architecture and great architectural ornamentation like the gate shown in our small feature photo above and in the large feature picture at the bottom of the page. We found this this ornamental gate on the door of a commercial building in the historic district. The interwoven vines and leaves of this image with the floral curtain behind it, make for an interesting contrast.

This city has so much wrought iron that it reminds you of New Orleans sometimes. The most famous wrought iron work (it is actually cast iron) in the city surrounds the lion fountain in front of the Cotton Exchange building on Bay Street.

Other notable ironwork is the fence around the fountain in Forsyth Park, the wrought iron veranda on the Marshall House Bed and Breakfast, as well as wrought iron railings and supports on countless homes in the historic district.

The second photo to the left shows one of our favorite homes in the historic district. The huge decorative metal brackets hold up a large balcony that features intricate iron scrollwork (shown in last photo).

The third photo shows a mansion in the historic district surrounded by an iron fence.

The forth photo is from the home mentioned above. Notice the elaborate decorative window frames. We believe that these are made of tin or possibly iron.

When you visit the city and you love architecture as much as we do, you might consider taking an Architectural Tour of Savannah.
