I know, that title isn't as catchy as John Berendt's, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", but I couldn't resist it. Savannah is like one large lush garden of live oak trees, Resurrection ferns and Spanish moss. These three thrive all over Savannah, from the charming little side streets to the city's numerous parks. The moss and the ferns would almost seem to choke these oak giants, but they get their nutrients from the air and not from the tree.
The Fern, Moss and Live Oak Gardens of Savannah Georgia
These photos were taken in January of 2007 on our trip to Savannah Georgia using a Canon Rebel XT. This grouping features photographs of the ferns, mosses and Live Oak Trees of this marvelous American Garden City.
In our small feature photo above and the larger version at the bottom of the page is shown a live oak tree in the foreground with a healthy growth of Resurrection Ferns growing on the side of the tree. The park in the background is Chatham Square in the southern section of the historic district near where we stay every year in January.
In the first photo to the left is shown the branch of one of the Live Oak Trees heavily laden with the ferns and mosses that are it's constant companions in this city that is beautifully landscaped. This urban landscape was designed by the forethought of some very intelligent and foreward thinking city fathers and maintained by an army of municipal workers to this day.
The second photo to the left shows a detail shot of a Resurrection Fern growing on the side of a tree.
The third photo shows an even closer shot of the fern.
