The Cotton Exchange is one of our favorite structures in Savannah. It is an imposing 3 story giant built by William Gibbons Preston around 1886. It is constructed of red brick with impressive terra cotta architectural ornamentation.
The front of the Cotton Exchange is framed by tall palm trees and oaks and guarded by a terra cotta lion fountain that measures over 5 feet tall. The collecting pool is enclosed by an incredible wrought iron fence that features presidential portraits and acanthus leaves. Originally the building was a cotton warehouse and market. The Savannah Chamber of Commerce used the structure for some time, and in 1974, it became a Freemasons or Masonic Hall.
When visiting Savannah, you'll find The Cotton Exchange on Bay Street near the golden domed City Hall building. The immediate area around the structure is called Factors Walk and the rear of the building faces River Street and the Savannah River. |
