Venezuela is the country I grewe up in. I am spanish blooded both parents from Spain. I live in Florida now. Caracas is the city I am most familiar with but I am familiar with very few others. If anybody is interested in this country or the city of Caracas, please ask away.

I have been thinking about visiting Venezuela for a while but I hear so many negative things about it. Is it safe for travelers as long as you stay in the city or on a resort?

To be honest with you, no, it is not safe. However, if you go with a group chances are you will have a good time.
The crime rates in the big city are exhorbitant and pollution is rampant. You will miss out though if you dont visit, for not only the city, Caracas is worthy of visit, the rest of the country has breath taking landscapes: flatlands, mountains, caverns and lakes and waterfalls. It is a shame that you almost cant go to it alone.

What is the deal with Hugo Chavez? One of my associates at work left the country, claiming the politics has gotten so bad. I am wondering, if they are really bad, how does this guy keep getting re-elected. My associate claims the elections are rigged and that Chavez isn't as popular as the media portrays him as.

Chavez is turning the country into a communist regime. That is the whole thing about his popularity amongst the poor in the nation. As for the common folk, yes he is destroying liberties and middle class that once citizens there used to enjoy...

That is sad that those things happen anywhere. I have seen pictures and there are some beautiful views in Venezuela.

I have always heard such great things about Venezuela. You would think that Chavez would be able to control the crime rate better with all of the powers that he is said to have and abuse.
