Frequent Flyer perk I hadn't known about
Last year I used my frequent flyer miles (American Airlines) to book a trip from US to Spain. When I was booking the trip, the person told me that I was allowed to stay up to thirty days in any European "gateway" city at no extra cost, regardless of where the flight originates or ends. My final destination was Valencia. Instead of flying into Madrid, I chose to fly into Dublin, where I stayed for a few days before flying to Valencia, by way of Madrid. So in essence, I got an extra stop-over in a city I'd wanted to travel to anyway.
So if you're going to book a frequent flyer trip, it's worth asking what options you have!
