The Incredible, Edible -- Prune
If you want to talk old fogey there's no way that you can't talk about, and praise the wonders of the prune.
I'm getting to the age where this dried fruit has made me better and happier with it's almost mythical ability to get you regular once again.
Along with the lovely flavor of whipped prune yogurt (I usually have to request that my grocer gets it in) I also eat what is known in my neighborhood as a tsimis.
It is usually made with prunes and sweet potatoes, but I leave out the sweet potatoes for my needs and just add prunes, different kinds of dried fruits, apples, apricots, raisins, figs of all types, and any other dried fruit. I put it in the biggest pot I have in the house, add water to the top and a few cinnamon sticks to taste. I then let the thing boil for an hour or so, until everything is uniformly plump and sweet.
I then let it cool and serve it as a cold dessert after each meal.
It will take a least a week or more for me to get through it and the last days of the tsimis are even better than the first days.
If eating a tsimis doesn't make you an old fogey, then nothing will
