Default The Wonders of Oatmeal

The fact that I am starting a thread to talk about the wonders of oatmeal just tells me how old I really am. There was a time when the last thing I would want to spend time talking about was oatmeal. I have hated it most of my life.

Since I've had to start watching my cholesterol, I have started eating this beige substance that I once swore was some sort of glop that carpenters used to fill holes in walls, and my feelings about it have changed tremendously.

I now can't wait to have my oatmeal in the morning. This thread is about how I came to love it!

FT

Oatmeal is great as I still eat it every morning. My kids always ask me how I can eat it everyday and i always tell them because it's good. Nothing is better than homemade oatemeal and of course homemade oatmeal cookies.

Ken, from a old lady here..I admire you my friend..those babies
are watching and they WILL develop those great eating habits
that you and their Mom give. You know what, my girls are all over
36..(all three) and they eat much healthier than their Dad and I.
I asked them about it and they say things like: 'Ma, don't you
remember you always made us clean our plates and eat lots of
green things'?' I learned that from MY Ma, and now THEY are
teaching it to their children!

I noticed the last time one of the girls came with her boys, they
ASKED for oatmeal, 'greens' (in the South) and fruit!

I have always had oatmeal but not always for breakfast. My father liked the long cooked, almost stiff oatmeal and that's what I grew up on.

We'd have it for breakfast, but also when we'd get home from a cold winter's day outing. We never had cocoa so I guess that role of a fast, warming food when you need it, was taken by oatmeal.

Our family learned that it can be a treat food when we were permitted to add something as a topping. We'd add chopped apples and raisins, cinnamon or nuts, (sunflower seeds mostly). My father used to have dried apple pieces with dried prunes and a fig on top of his. It took me years until I understood why he liked that combination. (I eat that now) LOL!

Looking back on my childhood and realizing that we never had cake or cookie in the house -- and that dessert meant fruit -- I finally saw that I learned to eat healthy without being told that it was healthy.

I really always thought that oatmeal with one of our toppings was a treat! Needless to say my family eats that way too today!

I like mine with pecans and bananas and just a little honey. It's much better for you than eggs and bacon which I used to have every morning. Those Quaker Oat commercials are really true too. It really does make your cholesterol better.

Personally, I prefer mine with a ton of fresh fruit (usally berries and bananas), light soy milk, almonds, cinnamon, sugar and a little butter. Actually that isn't all I add to mine. I use a mixture of half buckwheat and half oatmeal with a few flax seeds thrown in for texture and either some dates or raisins.

I know that sounds incredibly complex, but it is incredibly good. I don't think I will ever go back to eating eggs and pancakes again. The buckwheat which surprisingly is not a grain or wheat but is actually a fruit is an incredible addition to oatmeal. It isn't cheap, but it adds a marvelous richness to the dish.

Didn't anybody notice my really scary Quaker Oats guy above?
