A Volunteering Vacation

I don't know how popular these working vacations have become, but if there was ever a place that needed this sort of visitor, the Mississippi river basin needs them now.

Things haven't dried out yet, but I am sure plans are being negotiated for rebuilding the cities and neighborhoods affected. It may take several years for the region to recover.

If you are drawn to vacations that leave a region better than when you arrived, consider taking one, visit the flooded areas in the midwest, and lend a hand.

That's an excellent point, Diana. Two of the colleges near my office have had volunteer spring break trips since Hurricane Katrina. It's good to see students spending spring break helping those in need as opposed to partying on a beach.

Where most vacations are centered on the enjoyment of being away from your normal life, these would serve to remind you of your good fortune.

The effect would still be a renewed vigor for your daily challenges! You might not return as rested, but you would definitely be ready!

Looking through a site called Projects Abroad is a good start. They discuss volunteering opportunities from all over the world.

Globeaware is another site that lists volunteering opportunities as well.

I found out that some of these opportunities are tax deductible!
