Default Just In Time For The 4th of July Grills!

There are healthy Hot dogs!

For people who don't want to eat hot dogs because of all the health warnings about it, there are choices out there now that will permit you to have a healthy hot dog. Just think of it. Healthy and hot dog in the same sentence -- I kid you not!

There is now a SOY hot dog, called Soy Dogs (Surprise!). Here are some of its health benefits:

Soy dogs contain up to 13 grams of soy protein.

They have less MSG than in traditional hot dogs.

Growing soy uses less natural resources than meat production. Meat uses up to 17 times more land, up to 26 times the water, 6-20 times more fossil fuels and 6 times the biocides. So anything soy means that it uses less energy than meat and it is not only better for us but better for the planet.

OK, the soy dog I tasted was good, but I will admit that it was just a bit chewier than the usual meat dogs I have had in my foolish past.

But there are also meat dogs that are healthier than the traditional dogs too. I haven't seen these, but have read about them.

They are 100% hormone-and antibiotic-free, grass-fed beef dogs that are more expensive, but are well worth it if you have been denying yourself any hot-dogs for years because of all the health troubles that traditional dogs are said to have in them.

I'm sure you can find them in the better organic and free range meat stores.

Here's the name of the soy hot dogs that I found. It's called Yves Veggie Cuisine - It has five different varieties like jumbo and hot and spicy to eat. They are more expensive, but to be able to have a hot dog and not have to apologize to yourself for indulging is well worth the price to me.

I looked up the website:

Imagine, having hot dogs again, just like in the days of our youth!

I was JUST talking about this today! I've had something very similar, except they're called Tofu Pups (Get it... Hot DOGS; Tofu PUPS) and was amazed the first time I had them how good they are. A bit of mustard and I'm happy as a clam... I mean a tofu pup!

I gave a few pals some of my soy Dogs yesterday. I didn't mention that it was soy, I just said that they were something new and I bought some and if they would like to try them.

They might have had an idea it wasn't real meat. I usually talk about trying to go healthy and not have foods that are bad for you, but even so, they did have good reactions to them. No one threw them out or anything, and they all had seconds.

I admit that I had some great things to layer on top of them. There's a store I went to that has old fashioned Sour Kraut in a barrel. Also pickles in a barrel. I am totally salty today, but the toppings were so good I couldn't help myself.

I am definitely going to look for the organic dogs and those tofu pups.

It's just what I was afraid of. It takes years to stop wanting all the "bad foods" but they are oh so tasty foods, and it only takes a moment to get the habit back of longing for them.

It's taken me years to pass up hot dogs and now I am going to search for tofu and organic dogs. Hopefully I will not lose all sanity and go totally to the dogs.

Oh and I saw a special all about the USA and its love affair with Hot Dogs It was on PBS and was made almost ten years ago. I recommend it. It was lots of fun to watch.
