Hey KJS and many thanks..I will sure check again. If I can get us to a park (and cabin) without too many stairs, we will be OK. We could just ride the trails or roads around that allow a car. He can walk a little, just no distance. I was hoping to look up parks by state and go from there. (I don't think I am searching correctly)
If you did not figure it out yet, on the Find a Park page if you click by location the second column lists the states in alphabetical order. Click on the state you want and it lists all the parks in the state.
The bigger National Parks always have some good scenic routes that are fun to drive, especially in the morning when the animals tend to be more active and out in site.
Hey KJS..LOL, I was going to the wrong site..the one you recomended was very good! Yep..I am going to start on OTHER Southern states later this PM..There is NO camping type (National) parks in Ga., but some fabulous state parks.. so I am still looking. I am thinking the ones with excellent facilities and cabins are in the HUGE (attraction type) park areas. I also want to check out the Apalachian trail area, that runs through several states!
The Find a Park: National Park Service Website is incredible. It has searchable maps like the one above that shows a National Park within a short drive of your home in North Georgia. The Pisgah National Forest looks incredible.
Ahhh..great FT!! I was thinking there was none that you could CAMP (or rent cabin in)..Have you ever been camping, FT? I grew to love it when my girls were small and (then) JB & I loved the (luxury) camp in motor home that we can NO LONGER AFFORD!! (cheaper IMHO, to just get a medium priced room, but NOT as fun!) I want to see what is along the Appalacian trail!!
Great info that Kjscrafts gave us! (thank you all!)
My family and I have been going to National Parks here in the USA for years. Most are beautiful and well taken care of, with some of them having paved hiking trails so that everyone, no matter their age or health, can also take part in walks and enjoy the parks. Most have wonderful accommodations and you can either go first class or go all natural and rough it.
The Parks have passes that are quite affordable for the whole family, but if you include in your party, your grandparents or members of the family who have a disability -- the passes are rock bottom cheap. That's another reason to go to a National Park. Everyone is accommodated and I approve of that a lot!
Try going to your states' closest National park, even if just for a one day jaunt. NYC has a commercial that says there are 8 just here in town.
Please support the Parks. With Bush's plans for the privatization of National Parks, they might not be here that much longer.

my family and i, we have 2 kids 8y and 9y, enjoy trips to national parks. we live in Georgia, so we try to travel to nearby areas. last year we've been at some of the Alabama State Parks, which are perfect for family vacations. we loved liked the Monte Sano State Park!
It has been a while since I have any time to do any serious camping and backpacking, but now that summer is here I am determined to get out more. It does seem like all the good national parks are either west or east, but not too many here in central US.
I have been vowing to get out more too I use to camp habitually but it has been so long. When I lived in Washington the rainy weather held me back and now in AZ the heat holds me back lol... Sounds like it is time to find a happy medium huh?
