Jenbear,
Expedia, Travelocity and others are great for doing the research on because their search and compare technology is so advanced. I use them all the time for this, but when I decide which airline I want for my flight, I go directly to the airline site to make my reservations. This has saved me the booking fees that those services charge the airlines, and it very often has given me more choices on flights and seating choices than were available on Expedia and Travelocity.
Recently I found a great price for my flight to Atlanta and waited for a few hours to talk to my friends that were traveling with me. Well, when I went back to book the flight, I was told that the flight was totally sold out and that I would have to pay another $100.00 per ticket for any flight that day. I was very discouraged and I almost gave up. I decided to do what a friend had suggested and check the airline's website and to my amazement, the original flight at the great price that I found earlier was still available but on sale for $20.00 cheaper than the booking site had it for.
I hope this helps and good luck with your booking and your trip,
FT
