Scouting is a game with a purpose

The purpose of scouting is to instill values into scouts to help them make ethical decisions for their lifetime. A lofty goal with high expectations, accomplished through the act of scouting ... which relys on an outdoor program.

Scouting has an advancement program that goes along with the cool outings and activities. Each scout goes at his own pace and along the way develops fundamental skills, such as cooking, camping, swimming, first aid to take care of himself and his patrol. This program untimately leads the scout to an understanding of his rights and duties as a citizen. As each step in this program is accomplished, the scout is recognized and becomes eligible for leadership roles with greater responsibility.

Scouting and Troop 519 place an emphasis on service projects that give back to our community. Service projects are an excellent opportunity for scouts to develop leadership skills and to fulfill their role as good citizens. Within our troop, scouts who organize, lead, and participate in service projects are held in the highest regard. We strive to be known as the "Service Troop."

The combination of learning opportunities, planning, teamwork, leadership, and advancement are designed to help guide a scout, develop his character and give him the tools to make the right decisions in his lifetime.

A scout goes through the program at his own pace. Troop 519 provides opportunities throughout the year, but does not pressure scouts to participate or to advance. This permits scouts with other interests to focus on sports or other extra-curricular activities for part of the year and come back to scouting when those activities end.
