The Mules in the Wiregrass Mural was completed in 1994 by artist Mike Svob and commemorates the importance of the mule to local farmers in the Wiregrass area. The mule replaced the horse on local farms and allowed the farmers to get more work done in less time, making the farms more profitable.




The Wiregrass is a region that encompasses parts of three states in the southeastern United States; Georgia, Alabama and Florida. It includes southwestern Georgia, southeastern Alabama, and northwestern Florida [some parts of the Panhandle]. The region is named for a native grass that was common in the area. It is called wiregrass because its wiry roots and is related to Bermuda grass.





According to Wikipedia, "the region stretches approximately from just below Macon, Georgia and follows the Fall Line west to Montgomery, Alabama. From there it turns south and runs to approximately Washington County, Florida in the northern panhandle. From there it runs east, roughly making its southern boundary along Interstate 10 to Lake City, Florida. From there it turns north, roughly following the Suwanee [Suwannee] River back into Georgia and along the western fringes of the Okefenokee Swamp. From here it runs due north back to Macon."




Dothan is an important part of the Wiregrass Region or Wiregrass Country because it acts as a centrally located hub for transportation, distribution, commerce, shopping, lodging and entertainment for the region.
