Fonthill is located on a large 60 acre estate in the heart of Doylestown Pennsylvania. It was originally built as the private home of Henry C. Mercer in 1912. This sprawling spiraling castle has an amorphous almost haphazard feeling to it that makes for an exceptionally strange structure and a masterpiece of American architecture.
The castle has 44 rooms, 18 fireplaces, 32 staircases, 21 chimneys, 200 windows and thousands of decorative ceramic tiles that cover the floors, walls and ceilings of this amazing and eccentric structure.
Fonthill was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985. It is operated by the Bucks County Historical Society and a staff of 40 dedicated volunteers. These volunteers guide over 30,000 people through the castle annually.

If you've never been to visit the Fonthill museum, you are missing out on an amazing historical treasure.
Living only 2 miles from the Fonthill the past 13 years, I've visited many times on the outside. December we finally decided to take our first inside tour.
The candlelight tour with many rooms decorated with light Christmas trees was truly magical.
The tour guide takes the group around the castle stopping at each room taking you back in time sharing stories of Henry Chapman Mercer and describing the design and the unique process of how the ceilings, floors etc were created.
Each tour guide does their own research and has their own stories to tell. So you can visit many times and hear different stories with each visit.
Being one who enjoys art and photography, I plan to go back again during the day so I can enjoy a closer look at many of the art pieces hung throughout the castle.
My only regret is that we didn't take the tour sooner.
