Doylestown Pennsylvania is a thriving community of culture, commerce and history. It is located in the heart of Bucks County, one of the most beautiful areas of the entire United States.
Doylestown was fated to be an important little city early in it's history. It lies at the intersection of two of the oldest roads in early America: The East-West road from Philadelphia to New York City, Old York Road, or Route 202, and the North-South road from Philadelphia to Easton, Easton Road or Route 611.
It was at this intersection of important roads that in 1745, William Doyle built a tavern called Doyl's Tavern. It was this man and this tavern that came to be the namesake of this town: Doyles' Town.
Best of Doylestown: Culture
Any account of the Best of Doylestown has to begin with it's museums and cultural institutions that not only enrich this small community, but enrich the entire region.
Fonthill, The Mercer Tile Works and the Mercer Museum These three institutions are part of the cultural backbone of Bucks County. They were built by Henry C. Mercer in the early 20th century and are amongst the most unusual buildings in the Northeastern United States. The Mercer Museum houses an incredible collection of Early Americana, Fonthill, Mercer's home, is open to the public, and is a wonder to behold, and the Mercer Tile Works continue on Mercer's vision of fine American craftmanship, producing hand crafted art-tiles for builders, home owners and collectors.
The Michener Museum is a regional art museum dedicated to preserving, interpreting and exhibiting the art and cultural heritage of the Bucks County region. It is involved in special exhibitions all year long, as well as educational programs. It is also known to have one of the country's best collections of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings.
