Delaware River Reservoir Releases

In my last post I said that the reservoirs ought to be made to publish all of their information online. Well you'll have to pardon my ignorance. They already do that.

The Delaware River Basin Commission post all of the information you might ever want to know about the Delaware River Basin Selected Flow and Storage Data on their website. This data includes the reservoir capacity figures that everyone talks about so much that they refer to as: NYC 24-hr. Reservoir Observations.

The good news is that the information is here for us all to see ourselves. The bad news is, that most of the reservoirs were over 100 % today before this rain event began; Cannonsville was at 104.2 %, Pepacton was at 101.8 %, Neversink was at 100.8 % and Rondout at 99.4 %. This does not look good for our charming little towns along the Delaware River.

The NYC DEP posts the reservoir levels as well [see link to website below], but of course nothing about releases. We check it regularly and it only really serves to make us feel sick to our stomachs. Honestly, the benign NWS forecast doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, much as I would love to believe it. It doesn't add up that the quantity of rain being forecast could possibly *not* raise the river significantly above floodstage given the current gage levels and ground saturation. There has to be something missing from their calculations. Maybe that the 14 feet the river rose during the last rainfall had so much reservoir water included that the next one isn't expected to make it rise that much? That's my wishful thinking but I'm more inclined to believe that local emergency officials are predicting more realistically. I'm moving everything out of my cellar (again, sigh).
