The Crystal Beer Parlor is located in the historic district, but away from the hustle and bustle of the most highly trafficked tourist areas, but only 2 blocks from the Civic Center. This Savannah institution resides in a parlor that was originally a speakeasy in the 1930's. The atmosphere here is definitely laid back and homey. Despite the name, the restaurant is very child and family friendly.
The Beer Parlor features a dining room with high back leather booths and a 100 year old bar that serves 28 types of beers, all served in frozen glass mugs, cocktails and wines from Australia, Argentina, and other locations. On Friday nights, they feature live Dixieland Jazz music from 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM.
The menu here is gigantic, most likely one of the largest menus in Savannah. The house specialty is their famous award winning Crab Stew, that reportedly is so thick that you can stand a spoon in it. Other favorites include: a fried oyster sandwich, The SCAD burger (blue cheese burger with bluesabi sauce), a pimento cheese burger with grilled onions, Brunswick stew, homemade potato chips, Buffalo oysters (oysters dipped in Buffalo-wing sauce), fried okra and fish and chips.
They also offer salads, submarine sandwiches, deli sandwiches, hot dogs and desserts. Other heartier selections include: New York strip, crab cakes and seafood platters (crab cakes, flounder, oysters and shrimp).
Crystal has won awards and recognition from Georgia Trend Magazine, Woman's Day Magazine and Gourmet Magazine. Online, they have good reviews from locals and visitors. Reviewers tend to mention their burgers, thick cut homemade French fries, oyster sandwich, and crab stew over and over again.
