The Boat House is unique in the old sense of the word, [one-of-a-kind], not in the new sense of the word [merely unusual, weird or rare]*1. This dark and romantic bar is hidden in back alley on a side street in the little town of Lambertville New Jersey. The Boat House is filled with an odd and eclectic collection of maritime memorabilia, maps, pond boats, model ships, oars, paddles, sailing prints artifacts and artwork unlike any other I have ever seen. There are strange, marvelous and interesting things hanging at odd angles everywhere you look in this place. The cocktails and martinis are done beautifully here. There is a sophistication that is refreshing at the Boat House. It is one of the few places that you can order an extra dry martini and get what you ordered.
The Boat House is located a few steps away from the famous Hamilton Grill Restaurant and two complement each other perfectly. The bar serves as the grill's in house bar and wine shop. It is the perfect place to have a glass of wine or cocktails before or after dinner. On the weekends, it can be very busy, and you may not be able to get in. It is best to go during the week when you can relax, enjoy and investigate the collection there. In the summer, you can have a drink outside on their patio.
The Boat House is highly acclaimed by visitors and locals alike. It is one of my favorite places in the state of New Jersey.
*1 I’ve been astounded recently how often I’ve heard educated people and celebrities talking about how "very unique" something is, when the statement actually makes no sense. To say that the Boat House is very one of a kind is to make a nonsensical statement.
Evidently the new owner is not as interested in maintaining the old gracious atmosphere as was once fostered at the Boat House. 9 friends of mine and I, after dining across the way at the Hamilton Grill decided to end the evening with a night cap at the Boat House. We were all seated downstairs and approached by a female employee to take our order. The next thing I know we were being insulted by "the owner" and suggested that if we didnt behave in a manner befitting then we could take our business elsewhere. It is curious to me that anyone could evaluate our behavior as ;such ;since this whole scene took place in less than 2 minutes. So much for the warm friendly "professional" atmosphere of a business that evidently has a branded history in Lambertville. In this day I find it very difficult to spend my hard earned money with someone who obviously has a bad judge of character and business sense.

Well.... what can I say when we visit a place I've always liked, (when Jim Hamilton owned it) and were RUDELY treated? The "manager" downright lied to us, telling us to stop YELLING????? when we were NOT.. and invited upstairs by another couple! The new "owner" was obnoxious, and insulted our entire wine group! Just an ANGRY OLD MAN...... too bad. I guess he's happy with the place being empty and wanted to go home.
I am very disappointed and reading some previous reviews, see that "manager" needs to get some lessons on dealing with things called customers.......
