Angels BBQ is one of Savannah's hidden treasures for foodies. Angels servers Memphis style barbeque in an alley, between Whitaker and Bull Streets, near Chippewa Square in the middle of the historic district.
Memphis style barbeque is a dry rub bbq that is hickory smoked and features a hot and tangy sauce to achieve it's unique flavor. Angel's has worked on their sauce for years to achieve just the right taste.
One word of advice when you go, this bbq joint is tiny, and the menu even smaller, but according to their fans, it is well worth it. The menu features barbeque sandwiches made with pork, chicken or bologna (evidently a favorite of Elvis Presley), and barbeque plates that feature your choice of meat and 2 sides. The sides include the classic barbeque accompaniments like macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, French fries and baked beans. The most intriguing side dish however is the greens and peanuts.
The restaurant offers take-out and is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday-Saturday, and for lunch until 3:00 PM on Tuesday. (closed on Sunday and Monday) (Alternate listings, spellings: Angels BBQ, Angel's Barbeque, Bar-B-Que)
